Geographic Characteristics

Tanintharyi Division lies between latitudes 9°30N and 15°30N, and longitudes 97°45E and 99°30E.It is a narrow coastal plain which is about 360 miles long from north to south, and only 60 miles wide from east ot west at the widest part of landmass, and about 150 miles of the islands are included. The coastal plain is backed up by mountain ranges known as Tanintharyi Yoma. The Tanintharyi Yoma is, infact, a continuation of the Shan Plateau, and belongs to the Indo-Malayan mountain system. The altitude of Tanintharyi Yoma averages 3,000 feet, and the peak Myin-hmo-let-khat taung measure 6,810'.

The islands along the coast are the upper parts of submerged mountain ranges. Some of the familiar islands of Myeik Group are Mali ,Let-su-aw, Pale, Zadet-Kyi etc. Tanintharyi Division is drained by the Dawei, Taninthari, lenyar and Pachan rivers. The Pachan river forms the Myanmar-Thai border in the south,

Tanintharyi Division has a tropical monsoon climate, but the dry season is short for this division lies only 10 to 15 north of the equator. It receive an average rainfall of about "200", and rains for about 145 days in a year. The natural vegetation is tropical rainforest. Rice, maize, pulses, sugar cane, groundnut, and chillies are cultivated. Rubber,durian, mangosteen are also grown. The literate soil and the equatorial like climate favours the cultivation of rubber and oil palm(Elaersguinus).
