FOREWORD

The important role played by agriculture for our national ecnomic development needs no elaboration so that achieving a rapid and sustainable development of agriculture can be conceived as analogous to rapid and sustainable development of our national economy.In this respect, comprehensive and reliable agricultural statistics,among other things, is regarded as crucial for policy and planning purposes. Relizing this, the Project (MYA/85/004) to improve agricultural statistics was approved by the Government with financial and technical assistance from the UNDP/FAO.The Settlement and Land Records Department (SLRD) under the Minstry of Agriculture was assigned to carry out the Project.

I am glad that the "Report on Myanmar Census of Agriculture, 1993" has now came out as the output of Phase I of the ongoing Project.Assesing the content and coverage of the "Report, it is apparent that concerted effarts have been put by all those who participated in producting such on imparessive and good output. I full appreciate the effarts of all participants and would like to extend my congratulation to all of them. The statistical data and information included in the Report Would, on doubt, be of much value and use for future policy and plan formulation and implementation. The experiences gained and skills acquired from this Phase I of the ongoing Project are also expected to be of invaluable help in carrying out the remaining phases of the project.

At the same time, I would like to urge all participants to continue your good work by putting further effors in order to sustain the impressive growth momentum of agriculture so for achieved. I wish you all a success in carrying out the remaining phases of the ongoing Project.
