Geographic Characteristics

Yangon Division lies between latitudes 16°20'N, and 16°55'N and longitudes 95°45'E and 96°50'E. This division belongs to the eastern part of the Ayeyarwady delta region which has been built up mostly with recent alluvium and other sedimentary rocks especially sandstone. The Bago Yoma, as it continues southwards, enters Yangon as a low laterite ridge. From north to south, Yangon Division measures about 100 miles, and from east to west about 70 miles at the widest points, and covers an area of about 3,927 square miles.

Yangon Division enjoys the tropical climate; it receives monsoon rains; it rains for about 125 days a year, and with the annual average rainfall of about 100". The weather is well-defined as wet and dry seasons; the average annual temperature is 81°F. The hottest month is April with an average temperature of about 85° F, and the coolest month is January with an average temperature about 77°F.

The Myitmakha-Bawle-Hlaing, the Ngamoyeik Chaung, and Bago are the three rivers of the Yangon Division. The Ngamoyeik has its source in the Bago Yoma, and flows southwards to enter the Yangon river near Monkey Point. The Bago river which rises in the Bago Yoma, enter the division from the east and flows into the Yangon river near Thanlyin.

Yangon city, the capital of Myanmar, is situated within this division.As the seat of the capital city, the division is commercially as well as industrially the most developed region of the country.

Rice is the leading crop in the lowlying land, and rubber the most important perennial crop grown in the well- drained, lateritic soils.
