Geographic Characteristics
The Kayin State covers an area of 11,730.890 square miles. It has common borders with
Mandalay Division and Shan State on the north, Kayah State and Thailand on the east,
Shan State on the northeast, Mon State and Bago Division on the west. It occupies the eastern
part of the Tanintharyi ranges, which are the continuation of the Shan highlands. The Thanlwin
river and its tributares folw through the State. Rainfall is heavy throughout the region as the
State runs paralled to the Thanintharyi coast but has no coast line. It rains for about 136 days
in a year and the average rainfall is about 173.62 inches. Average total annual rainfall in same
places is as high as a total of over 180. The average temperatuer is 80°F; the maximum
temperature 82°F and minimum temperature 61°F.
Agriculture is the main economic activity. About million acres are cultivated every year, the
principal crops cultivated being paddy, groundnut, sesamum, tobacco, betel net, sugar-cane and
rubber. Coffee, tea, oranges and durians are also important crops from plantations. About 19.9%
of a population i.e. 0.15 million people ( in 1983 ) was engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry,
forestry, fishing and hunting.
