Geographic Characteristics

Kayah States lies between latitudes 18°30' N and 20°N, and longitudes 97° E,and covers an area of 4,538 square miles. As the state belongs to the shan plateau, the terain is rugged with a number of lakes and water-falls. Of the water-falls, Baluchaung is the site of the Lawpita hydroelectric power plant.

Kayah State is landlocked; it rains for about 90 days in a year, and the average annual rainfall is about 45". The average temperature is about 71°F, the maximum temperature may reach 97°F and the minimum 61°F.

A considerable area is still covered with forests, teak and hardwoods like pyinkado, padauk, and ingyin are being extracted. Rice, wheat, maize, millet, sesamum, cotton,soy bean, chillies, gralic, tobacco ,oranges, bananas and vegetables are grown.
