Geographic Characteristics
The Bago Division covers an area of 15,214,129 square miles.The Bago Yoma, a mountain range, runs from north to south, and so does the Sittaung River.Since Bago Division is in the tropical part of Myanmar, it receives monsoons rain. It rains for about 130 days in a year and the average rainfall is about 129.6 inches. The abundant supply of fresh water and vast stretches of fertile land make Bago Division one of the major paddy growing regions of the country. About 2.7 million acres are cultivated every year; the agricultural produce being mainly paddy. Other crops include sesamum,groundnut,pulses, jute, rubber, tobacco, and sugarcane. About 66.50% of a population i.e. 3.8 million people (in 1983) was engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishing and hunting.
